I have made this recipe 3 times and feel confident in this review. I would avoid using regular limes as they can be too tart for the flavor of a key lime pie - really then, that becomes just a "Lime Pie". The only substitution I make is the topping. 1 c sour cream mixed with 1 c powdered sugar provides an excellent taste combination with the filling, but confess I have never used whipping cream as the topping component. It may be a taste substitution and dependent on which you are shooting for in the end product.
