In less time than it takes to order and bring home take-out, you can pan-fry tofu until crisp, simmer broccoli florets, and bring them together with a lightly sweet soy and sesame sauce (which is generous enough to spoon over rice). Whether you're cooking vegetarian or gluten-free, or you just want a healthy choice, this one's a keeper for weeknight dinners. The recipe is a Yummly original created by Sara Mellas.

  • 1 lb. extra firm tofu (block, approximate, depending on package size)
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1/2 inch fresh ginger
  • 1/3 cup water (for sauce)
  • 2 tsp. cornstarch (for sauce)
  • 1/3 cup tamari (gluten-free if you like)
  • 3 Tbsp. light brown sugar (packed)
  • 4 tsp. rice vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp. toasted sesame oil
  • 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper (optional)
  • 2 scallions
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1 Tbsp. cornstarch (for tofu)
  • 1 Tbsp. neutral oil (canola, safflower, or grapeseed, for first batch of tofu)
  • 1 Tbsp. neutral oil (canola, safflower, or grapeseed, for second batch of tofu)
  • 3/4 lb. broccoli florets (4-5 cups)
  • 1/4 cup water (for broccoli)
  • 2 tsp. sesame seeds

Great! I need practice cutting my tofu. I steamed the broccoli separately while mixing tofu into simmering sauce. Daughter in law vegetarian loved it. She made white rice ‘cause it was so juicy.

DELICIOUS! This will def be incorporated into our routine meal lineup. Note to self: increase brown sugar to 4Tbsp. and to make it a more full robust meal for the hubby add soba noodles.

Had an off taste, possibly a result of too much corn starch in the sauce.

Turned out mighty fine. Next time, I’m going to try cutting back on sugar for my husband who is watching his his A1C. I didn’t have rice vinegar, so substituteed with white cooking wine. I probably used twice as much ginger, so it was turned out extra spicy. I’ll make it again. Next time I’ll make rice too and try other veggies too.

Turned out great. Very easy. Tofu stuck to pan, which was irritating.

This tasted much better than I expected it to. I had doubts about the broccoli not having seasoning and only being steamed but when I combined It with the sauce at the end it was amazing!

LOVE how the tofu turned out. used broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. served it with egg fried rice. didn't use ginger.

Really good. added kale, mushrooms, onion to broccoli, only had corn meal but that worked okay for the tofu. Really liked the sauce! We didn’t mix it all together- just served out of the pots on the stove We had Brown rice, too.

Better not replace the tamari with regular light soy sauce. Turned out very salty. I'd also not dump the tofu into the sauce as it loses its crunch.

Really good and easy recipe. Next time I'd add more oil to sauté the tofu so it gets more crispy, but other than that it was great as it. Wouldn’t mind adding some more veggies next time, like bell pepper and snap peas.
